Many people have asked “What’s the best way to get noticed on the Internet and what’s the most important thing to do?” The simplest and in no way comprehensive answer is keyword research. The most popular way for someone to locate a website is by going through a search engine. Google has the greatest market share, so it’s important to target their results more than any other search engines. Today, clients are becoming much better at searching with Google, so keywords have progressively become longer in order to return more relevant results.

With more people moving towards local searches, you’re going to need to target your Internet Marketing to specific keywords and areas. If you fail to do this, you’ll be competing with the major national players in your industry. Think of your business, what are the one or two words that best describe your business? Now you will see a box on the page that say asks you to enter one keyword or phrase per line. Enter your phrases and check the “use synonyms” box. Put in the text in the captcha box and click “Get Keyword Ideas”- that’s going to give a nice list of words and phrases related to your search.

You will see four columns – first the list of related phrases, next Adwords competition, local search and global search volume. There are two schools of thought here. One is going after words that are searched the most and the other using long tail phrases – phrases with little completion however, that could be highly targeted to you business. For example, the term “Search Engine Optimization” is searched for over 800,000 times per month globally however the term “search engine optimization cost” – although searched for under 3000 times, there is a good chance this searcher would be a buyer and you would want to include theses keywords. Hit the add button and create a list of 20 or so phrases that will work for your business. Also, if your business is local add you locations as key words. You can save now this a file to your computer. You will use this list to optimize your website and make your website search engine friendly.
